Published on June 17, 2019

National Email Week lands on the second week of June every year. If you didn’t catch our tips sprinkled through social media all week long – you’re in luck! We’ve recapped them in this handy blog that includes some excellent statistics to get you excited about the facts and future of email marketing.

Some people say that email marketing is dead, but they could not be further from the truth! In fact, according to OptinMonster.com and Inc.com, 99% of consumers check their email everyday, and 73% of millennials prefer communication from businesses to come through email. Furthermore, according to CampaignMonitor.com, there is on average $38 earned from $1 spent in email marketing. How about that for ROI!

As you can see, email marketing is not dead, it has actually become an incredibly fruitful strategy to businesses who have learned how to do it effectively. Here are some tips to help improve your email marketing game:

EMAIL MARKETING TIP #1: Segment Your Lists! You can segment by location, purchase behavior, website activity, job title, type or frequency of purchase and more. Segmenting your email lists allows for more tailored conversations that lead to increased open and click-through-rates as well as greater revenue due to greater email relevance. Consider this, you are a small boutique retail store selling outdoor gear and apparel. Simply segmenting your lists by hiking, camping, fishing, or climbing means the content each of your subscribers sees is directly related to their favorite outdoor activities, instead of having to browse through your content to find what’s meaningful to them.

EMAIL MARKETING TIP #2: Use Extra Care in Your Subject Line! Your subject line can make or break your email campaign. If the subject line is not carefully written, your audience is unlikely to open all the juicy goodness inside. Using certain words in your subject line could also cause your email to land in Spam folders, never to be seen again. Here’s a good list of spam trigger words to avoid in your subject lines.

EMAIL MARKETING TIP #3: Test! Test! Test – TEST ALL OF THE THINGS! Split, or A/B testing allows marketers to get more insight into what actually works for their audience. Once you’ve tested content against each other, you gain a better understanding of what your audience really wants and what gets people to open and click.

EMAIL MARKETING TIP #4: Provide Value! Your emails should provide something of value to your audience. Whether it’s a special offer, or quick tip to make their lives or jobs easier, offering value means people will continue to open your emails instead of unsubscribing. This doesn’t always mean you have to give away something for free, or provide a discount to provide value. A realtor who just sold you a house could send you decorating tips and referrals to the best landscapers, security companies or energy saving tips, this doesn’t cost the consumer any money or the business any of their bottom line. It simply supports the lifestyle of the consumer and keeps the business relationship strong long after the closing of the sale.

EMAIL MARKETING TIP #5: Personalize! Be sure to personalize your emails with first names. People are more likely to open, read and click through your email when they feel like you are speaking directly to them versus a group of people. When an email comes through and is clearly written to the masses, we feel less compelled to take it personally, because the email didn’t let us take it there.
